Division 2 final four fixtures all count

Winter League

The final round of League fixtures in Division 2 on Tuesday 17 February

It is the final day of the Division 2 season and all four fixtures will feature in resolving the final placings at both ends of the table. Starting at the top end where the top two face each other as already crowned Champions, Clayton West, face second-placed New MIll B. The New Mill team are looking for a second consecutive promotion but will need to beat the unbeaten Champions to guarantee that second promotion place.

That is a big ask but if they don't achieve that then it is down to Lindley Lib A to step up to the mark and claim that 2nd place for themselves. Their final fixture is against Marsh United who need four points to ensure that they don't get landed into the second relegation place. So two teams needing to win for very different reasons. Still with me?

Then lets turn to the foot of the table where Lowerhouses B are already relegated despite a brave rearguard action, finally succumbing to the inevitable. Meltham A have been in the relegation places all season until the last round of fixtures when an 8-0 win over Milnsbridge A saw the teams swap places. Now the onus is on the Milnsbridge to come up with a last day big win to save themselves from relegation that a run of three 0-8 defeats in their last four matches has brought about. Fortunately for them, that last fixture is against already relegated Lowerhouses B.

For the first time this season, a safety landline is within the grasp of the Meltham A team. They need to equal or better the Milnsbridge A scoreline to secure themselves another season in Division 2, which their second-half of the season results have deserved. Since the beginning of December they have only lost to the top two teams and have won 6 of their last 8 fixtures. It is going to be quite a finale as teams sign off another season of winter bowling before meeting up again next October in the Division that Monday's results will determine. Great stuff!

The Top Bowler award has already been won by Lindley Lib A bowler Lyndon Harris, playing in the Winter League for the first time after becoming age-qualified in late October. Beaten only once in 13 matches he is already two wins better off than his nearest opponent and cannot be caught. Well clear in top place with four Clayton West bowlers immediately behind him. The trophy for the title-winners was presented to the Champions last month and the trophy to Lyndon will be made before the start of Tuesday's final round of fixtures.
