Crossgates bowler wins LBC £4,000 Open

A new name will be engraved on the John Allen Memorial Trophy when Crossgates bowler Steve Gilroy came out on top of a strong field in the Lindley Bowling Club’s £4000 open competition on Friday evening. The trophy and winner’s cheque for £1200 was presented to Steve by Janet Allen the club’s organiser of the event. Ashley Tattersley was the beaten finalist and his reward of £700 was presented by a Samuel Brigg employee.


On a lightning-fast green most games lasted an hour or more. But as the evening went on many were caught out by the change in running with eight or nine yard woods counting.

The match of the night was the clash between Crosland Moor’s Nathan Haigh and Simon Coupe of Preston. After 17 ends Nathan held a lead of 15-9. In the remaining 14 ends Simon could only register 10 singles whereas Nathan scored two pairs and two singles.


In the semi-final against Nathan, Steve scored five pairs to Nathan’s two. In the other semi-final Ashley came out on top 21-16 in a long- fought battle against Hyde’s Jack Hargreaves. 


Amanda Turton presented Steve and Jack with £50 each as they shared the highest break prize. The photographs below show event organiser Janet Allen with greenkeeper Mike Thornton, the finalists and sponsors.
