Cowcliffe lose 100% win record

Winter League

Review of the Divisions 1 & 2 matches played on Wednesday 17 January 2024

On a day when the Division 1 fixture programme was decimated by a frozen green at Milnsbridge the spotlight was on Division 2 as Cowcliffe A didn't win for the first time this season going down 2-6 to Lindley Lib A.

That was a major surprise as the Lindley team sat in the mid-table position of 5th and had lost more games than they had won this season whereas Cowcliffe had won all 10 of their fixtures this season to open up a 22-points lead at the top of the table. Lindley won both singles games and took the aggregate 47-44 to run out clear winners.

Milnsbridge A took full advantage to close the gap at the top to 18-points after white-washing Lockwood Con A 8-0 but more importantly gives them a 6-points lead over third-placed Denby Dale who were without a match this week so have a match in hand over their rivals for the second promotion place.

There are only 8-points between the bottom four teams which makes matches between them all the more important and we had one of those this week. Springwood A beat Huddersfield Recreation Club A by 6-2 to distance themselves from the relegation places and Brockholes A had a really good win 6-2 over Lindley BC B to open up a 5-points gap between themselves and the two relegation places.

The one match that was completed in Division 1 saw the leaders Thorpe Green A collect all 8-points over Clayton West to open up a 12-points lead over Lower Hopton and New Mill A who are level on 48-points and will meet for a 10.00am start next Wednesday to play their outstanding fixture. Kirkheaton Con and Lindley BC A will meet at the same time to complete their fixture with just the pairs match to play. After each taking one of the singles games played on the white surface at Milnsbridge on Wednesday there are 4-points to play for in the one remaining leg.
