County team confirms superiority over W&W

Bowling News

Last year the Yorkshire Senior Men's County team beat Warwick & Worcester (W&W) at the Semi-Final stage of the BCGBA competition before going on to beat Shropshire in the Final. So a repeat of that result this year, albeit at an earlier stage of the competition, may be a good omen for the team's chances of retaining the title. It didn't always look like that though with fluctuating fortunes throughout the afternoon.

Three home leg winners from the first four was satisfactory until the scores from the away leg came through. The Bowls Results website provided evidence that things were not going so well in deepest Warwickshire soon to be confirmed by an announcement over the PA system. That was that all four Yorkshire bowlers from the first round of games were beaten with a 62-84 scoreline. With the home leg aggregate in favour of the home team 83-64 so making the aggregate 145-148 in favour of W&W.

A good crowd at Meltham enjoyed the sunshine which helped to quicken the green during the course of the afternoon and improve the thirst of many of those spectators and the day became more vocal as the matches progressed and matters became ever closer. All credit to the visitors they contributed to the great atmosphere with one bearded bowler in particular with a considerable lack of volume control who kept up an incessant chant encouraging his teammates on.

Things didn't seem to improve for the Yorkshire team as two more of the next four home bowlers went down to 13 and 20 but then great relief with the word from Warwickshire that all four of the middle four had won their matches for the Yorkshire side and then 3 of the last 4 as well to put the icing on the cake. A final spurt at home saw three more winners to make a 15-9 match win and the important aggregate totals of 464-403 which just about matched the 64 difference recorded when these two teams met last year.
