Gambart Baines 2025

by Dave Parkin

On a sunny Bank Holiday Monday on the East Coast in Scarborough, 127 bowlers (one withdrawal through illness) competed for the right to be called the 2025 Gambart Baines winner.

The tournament dates to 1919 when local resident & benefactor, Mr Gambart Baines originally from Leeds presented a trophy worth 80 guineas for a bowling tournament.

This year’s event was held at 4 greens: Eastfield, Borough & 2 at Alexandra Park with 32 at each green playing down to 4.

The Last 16 was run at Alexandra Park.

The event attracted lots of top bowlers, local ones plus plenty of families attracted by the £15 entry fee, one of the lowest around for an Open tournament.

Defending champion, Callum Wraight reached the final with his toughest opponent being Gareth Coates in the Last 8.

He faced Sheffield’s Stephen West in the final & won 21-13 to take his 3rd title in this event & his 3rd title this weekend making the 4-hour drive from Shrewsbury with his family worthwhile.

He took home £750 & was presented it by the current Mayor of Scarborough who has custody of the valuable trophy.

Callum’s “best ever season” as he said in his victory speech means the reserve list for BCGBA Champion of Champions is being depleted.
