Bistro Quarter-Final shock results expected

It is the Quarter-Finals stage of the 2026 Bistro KO this Friday with teams from each of the 5 divisions of the 10-Man League represented. The draw includes teams from the very top of Division 1 and the bottom of Division 5 and all ports in between. The sole representative from Division 5 is Almondbury BC B who sat at the bottom of that Division when eliminating Division 1 team Golcar Lib A in the last round but that charged an upsurge in form to win two League matches since, both against teams in the top half of the table.

With a +46 handicap advantage, they now take on another Division 1 team in Cowcliffe who start off scratch. That works out at more than a 9-point start in each of the 5 pairs games in a Bistro match. That is a formidable start for any team, especially one hitting their best form of the season. Division 1 leaders Lowerhouses also have to concede a big starting handicap of 36 to Division 4 high-flyers Kirkheaton Con B who come into the tie on the back of a Tuesday 9-0 home win to boost their chances. With another brown green to overcome as well, games can become something of a lottery, so shock results cannot be dismissed in either of these two matches.

The format of matches in the Bistro of five handicapped pairs needing a best aggregate score to find the winners has always produced some surprise results and that certainly holds good for the Quarter-Finals this year. When is a shock result really a shock result? When it is unexpected. Seems like some of these meetings favour the underdog with huge handicaps to twist the likelihood towards the lower division teams. Is that a good thing or does it undermine and belittle the competition? With only two Division 1 teams left among the last eight and both in the same half of the draw, it means that we will not be having an all-Division 1 Final. Is that a bad thing?

Division 2 leaders Meltham have to face the Division 3 promotion candidates, Linthwaite Hall who have a 10-point start and with both teams in good form any result is possible. Two more promotion hopefuls in competition make up the quarter-final line up as Netherton Con A are in 2nd place in Division 2 as are their opponents but in Division 4 with a 14-point handicap difference to introduce the surprise outcome always possible.
