15-Year-old Doncaster lad wins 1975 Hudd C-of-C

Memories

This may be the final episode of the search to confirm the youngest-ever winner of the Huddersfield Champion-of-Champions title.

Yesterday speculation on the youngest ever Huddersfield Champion of Champions strayed from a 25year-old to a 15year-old. We think that we now have the real answer.

Contributions from Dave Parkin and Alan Brown have got us this far and now I am indebted to Alan Crowther for finding and forwarding this definitive Peter Muff article from The Examiner in October 1975.

The headlines from it are:

  • Gary Leighton 15-years-old Doncaster schoolboy wins the 1975 Huddersfield Champion of Champions

  • He qualified by winning the Doncaster Merit and winning a wildcard invitation

  • Beating Gene Bardon in the Final at Lindley Lib by 21-16 after being 0-4 down after the first two ends.

  • Winner's prize was £20

  • He beat 3 current County bowlers on his way to the title as before Bardon he beat David Harrison and Roy Nicholson

  • If Gary lived in Huddersfield he wouldn't have been old enough to play in any of the qualifying competitions

How many of you can remember having a pair of flared trousers like Garys' in this picture?

I've done the best I can to enlarge the full article by chopping it down into 3 images which follow on from each other and it is definitely worth a full read.
