Three new Winter League special trophies

Winter League

At the Annual General Meeting of the Winter League in July, an appeal went out for the sponsoring of four new trophies for the 2022-23 season. With the expansion of the League from 3 to 5 divisions new trophies to be awarded to the Division 4 and 5 Winners and Division Top Bowlers were required.

Within days we had received offers for three new trophies which we are delighted about. That is not just because of the generous nature of the offers but the fact that they are all of special significance to local bowling.

Tony Booth was a Winter League bowler with Lowerhouses when he passed on earlier this year after a short illness. His wife, Michelle, is a member of the Winter League Management Committee and has offered sponsorship of a new perpetual trophy to fill one of the gaps. We are delighted to be able to remember Tony in this way and thank Michelle for her generosity.

Two remarkable brothers are the subject of separate offers of sponsorship. Leonard and Arthur Tracey have been stalwarts of local bowling and especially Lindley Liberal Club teams for many years. Unfortunately, Leonard passed away in April last year aged 96. His son Michael considers that a bowling trophy named after his father would be a most fitting tribute and has sponsored the purchase of The Leonard Tracey Cup to be competed for annually in the Winter League. It is likely that this will be awarded to the winner of the Division 5 title each season here-on.

Lindley Liberal Club has similarly offered sponsorship for an identical cup to be called The Arthur Tracey Cup which will probably be awarded to the winner of the Division 4 title which will be played for at Lindley Liberal Club over the 2022-23 season. Arthur, although now aged 94, is still very active and plays for the club's team in the Veterans 6-Man League every week. It would be great to see Arthur presenting that trophy at the end of the coming season.

We have been very fortunate and honoured to receive these three offers which have their own links with bowling and the Winter League. We do still require a fourth trophy to complete the required number for the coming season so if anyone else is thinking of offering sponsorship then we would be delighted to hear from them.
