Ladies Week ALL OUR YESTERDAYS
We have extended Ladies Week beyond the original 7 days but now conclude the feature with a glut of photographs from 1984. Not a lot of commentary to go with them but hopefully a few memories to take you back in time. We will continue looking back on occasions with our All Our Yesterdays series and no doubt they will include some ladies competition memories again then.
At the bottom of this posting are photos of two ladies who are both tagged as being the Huddersfield Ladies Merit Champion for 1984. Help required please.
In addition there are a couple of missing names or names from the records below that need confirming so if you can do that it would be most appreciated and I will update the page accordingly. Please correct me with any errors you find as well. Contact Me
The year was 1984
The 1999 Hilda England Trophy final was played at Thongsbridge and the semi-finalists are pictured above with Mrs England holding the trophy. Left to right: Christine Ratcliffe (Longwood), runner-up Anne Liversedge (Broad Oak), Barbara Helyar (Newsome) and the winner Kathy Sykes (Waterloo BC).
The quarter-finalists in the Kirklees Summer Festival Ladies Merit staged at Ravensknowle Park. Iris Gwynne (Almondbury Cons) took the title for a 3rd time in 5 years by beating May Roebuck of Ravensknowle Park 21-20 in the final.
Back row: (left to right) Anne Jennings, Freda Beaumont, Bessie Nunns, Susan Wilde Front row: Margaret Burgess, Iris Gwynne, Olive Parr (organiser), May Roebuck and Janet McDonagh.
The semi-final line-up for the Ladies Pairs Handicap of Elland Association Festival Week. Left to right: Iris Gwynne, Audrey Batchelor, Jean Atkinson, Judith Muff, Jean Gornall, Cathy Gordon, Audrey Patterson, Janette Patterson. The winners were Jean Atkinson and Audrey Batchelor and the runners-up Iris Gwynne and Judith Muff.
Doris Seale (Hove Edge and Almondbury Lib) who won the 1984 Yorkshire Park Ladies Hyman Morris Trophy with a 21-16 win over Janette Patterson (Holmfield Park and Crosland Moor Liberal) at Shroggs Park. Doris had to win 7 rounds over 12 hours in a day with 128 competitors to lift the trophy and a £35 cheque. At that time Doris was the reigning All-England Ladies Merit Champion having won the 1983 title.
Former Huddersfield Ladies Merit Champion Christine Kaye (Cowcliffe Liberal) won through to the final of the All-England Ladies Merit after coming out best at the preliminaries at Lindley Liberal Club. Christine beat Outlane bowler Lynne Brook in the final of the qualifier and she had also got through to the middle stages of the Waterloo Ladies £3,000 Handicap to be played at the waterloo BC at Blackpool and so has her sister Eileen Wooltorton who also plays at Cowcliffe Liberal.
Now there is a little confusion about the final two photographs of this series as both were reported in The Examiner as being the Huddersfield Ladies Merit Champion for 1984. It may well be that these are two different merit competitions or it may be that the years are incorrect. Please feel free to update me so that I can complete the record here. Contact Me
